Feet First Walking

 

This walk has everything...an ancient abbey, lovely village, riverside paths, two hillforts and a medieval church. For such a short walk, it punches above it's weight.

This lovely garden was at the start of the walk, opposite the shed that sells ice creams and coffee. Whilst we put our boots on, we were privy to a conversation between a couple who must have recently met-up thanks to a dating app. He asked, 'what was it about his profile that attracted her?' She replied, 'the bit about the firm handshake'! A euphemism perhaps?

 

We went through this gate into the meadows.

 

The Thames was quiet, apart from a few pleasure craft and some bathers.

 

Little Wittenham Bridge where we crossed the river.

 

 

St Peter's Church, Little Wittenham. The tower is 14th century, with the remainder of the church being re-built in 19th century. The seats outside were a welcome break, being in the shade of the trees, out of the heat.

 

 

We went through the gate opposite the church and headed through the field towards the Clumps.

 

Things started to get hotter and steeper.

 

Looking back there were fine views of the Thames and Oxfordshire.

 

One Clump down, and the second one lay only a short distance away.

 

The impressive ramparts of the Iron Age fort on Castle Hill. Archaeological work has shown that it was also a Bronze Age settlement; it is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

 

Off in the distance, another clump for another day, maybe?

 

On the return journey back to Little Wittenham.

 

We had a lovely lunch in The George and then had a look around the Abbey.
